Defector
Saturday 5th April saw the opening of Format, one of Newcastle’s newest contemporary art galleries and the launch of their first show Defector. Curated in league with North East based art/music collective The Ghetto Method, the show featured work from some of their flag ship artists including Mr Guy, Creative Ginger and Ben Lawson with a special appearance from Edinburgh resident illustrator Magda Boreysza.

“Defector brings together a group of artists from Ghetto Method whose work has developed aside from the mainstream, and in many ways defies categorisation. Though recent years have seen a swell in interest and publicity, particularly around urban art, Defector is not an exhibition that is vacantly following a national art trend. These are urban artists as illustrators, designers, and thinkers with a distinct gothic twist and dark humour.”

This is what Format had to say about their gallery: “Format is an unconventional space in an unconventional place. Format sources items from all genres and geographies, presenting the established alongside fresh and emerging talent. Format is interactive, responsive and continuously evolving in content, product and experience. Format HQ operates in a series of revolutions between shop and show. Look, play or buy.”

The show opened to the public on 8th April and runs until 17th May.
