“I just hate trends. If everyone is wearing neon, I’ll wear black and this whole 80s thing is so fucking played out”

Lets cut to the point. There are very few, if any, female rappers or producers in the UK as talented and as good looking as Croydon based beatsmith Goldielocks.

This part Swedish part British 20 something blonde bombshell is currently one of the UK’s freshest urban music talents, having played gigs from London to New York (not to mention a fair few places in between), worked with the likes of Kate Nash, Example, Frisco and Tinchy Stryder and all before her first official release, you can tell when you hear her music that you’ve stumbled upon something a bit special.

With her first official release due to drop this April, Goldielocks (aka Sarah Akwisombe) has been making music for little over 3 years and in this time has not only amassed a small army of fans and admirers but has also managed to get a deal along side Plan B, The Streets and Example with UK music publishing label Puregroove.

Goldielocks describes her sound as “..a bit of electro, a bit of grime and some hip hoppyness with some weird London girl ‘rapping’ over the top” but depending on what you choose to read you might also see quotes like “If Canadian sex funker Peaches joined the Sugababes, the end result would sound like Goldielocks” a comment that would have any self respecting music appreciator flocking to MySpace with open ears.

“I don’t really listen to (new) music cos it corrupts my originality. I start thinking ‘oh that’s what all the kids are listening to’ so then it influences me subconsciously”

First appearing on the famous social network back in it’s hay day Goldie makes no bones about the fact that it helped her get where she is and how it brought her music to the wider audience “…about 90% of my fans are from MySpace. It’s an amazing promotional tool and things like MySpace and all that are starting to take the power away from the major labels and back to the consumer which I like” and like her counter parts she approaches her MySpace ‘empire’ with a militant persistence, updating blogs, posting bulletins and adding new tracks on an almost daily basis all the while keeping the fans hungry for more.

But what may surprise most people after hearing her tracks is what catches Goldie’s ear music wise “Nirvana, Roisin Murphy, Miles Davis, Slipknot, Ray J, Chris Brown, Dead Prez, Hacienda classics” and new music “I don’t really listen to (new) music cos it corrupts my originality. I start thinking ‘oh that’s what all the kids are listening to’ so then it influences me subconsciously” says Goldie, that is unless, they’re close personal friends “The Sick Kids, Example, Thecocknbullkid, Frisco, Lele Speaks, Miss Odd Kidd, Tinchy Stryder, Sem, Tinashe. They are all sick”

“…I’ve got some T shirts coming out soon and what with the record industry going tits up it looks like merch is the only way to make money these days”

Not content with just listening to the music her mates put out, Goldielocks also recruits them to play at her ‘Hard Knock Wife’ clubnights at London’s ‘Social’ night club, she describes the event as “…live music from underground acts that I think are banging. This month we have Me, Lele [Speaks] and Frisco”. “It’s not like poncy trendy vibes it’s just good music and peeps who are cool without being pretentious” she added and if you wondering about the possibly this will make it out of LDN to tour other UK clubs? “…it’s way too early. I tried to do an under 18s event once and it majorly flopped so I’m just taking it slow and trying to build a crowd who come back each time.”

But that’s not all she has up sleeve, in addition to her talents as a lyricist, beat maker, producer and event organiser she also manages to keep a handle on fashion. Often sporting brands such as Trainerspotter, Trapstar and NBFG, she never fails to get it right and has even been know to do a spot of modelling. “I just hate trends. If everyone is wearing neon, I’ll wear black and this whole 80s thing is so fucking played out. Now I’m just wearing grungy stuff but still with my urban influences, which is basically who I am as a person and what my music is.” and with friends The Sick Kids already cashing in on the custom garms market is there a Goldielocks clothing label or collaboration in the pipeline? “I wish! I’ve got some T shirts coming out soon and what with the record industry going tits up it looks like merch is the only way to make money these days. Can you all buy one so that I can finally move out of Croydon?!”

The first official release from Goldielocks titled ‘Wasteman/Neek Chic’ is a double A side out on Locked On Records and is available to pre-order from the Puregroove online store now.
